A historic inland town in the fertile Cetina valley, celebrated across Croatia as the home of the Sinjska alka — a traditional equestrian tournament held annually since 1715 to commemorate the town's miraculous defence against an Ottoman army, and recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The town is dominated by the hilltop fortress of Stari Grad and a basilica housing the miraculous painting of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj, venerated by pilgrims. The Cetina river canyon, Peruća lake, and the surrounding Dalmatinska Zagora countryside offer excellent outdoor experiences. The best months to visit Sinj are May, June, July, August, September.
