The Grisia Art Exhibition in Rovinj 2026 — Istria's most charming art event, with hundreds of artists exhibiting on the beautiful cobblestone Grisia Street each August. Free entry.
The Grisia Art Exhibition is one of the most charming and distinctive art events in the entire Mediterranean — a single-day open-air gallery held each year on Grisia Street in Rovinj, a narrow, steeply rising cobblestone lane that winds up from the waterfront to the Church of St. Euphemia at the very top of the old town peninsula. On the second Sunday of August, hundreds of artists — amateur and professional, local and international — hang their works on the walls, doors, and facades along this extraordinary street, transforming the entire lane into a kilometre-long gallery that visitors can explore for free, with works available to purchase directly from the artists.
Rovinj's Most Beautiful Street
Grisia is already one of the most beautiful streets in Croatia without the art — a steep, winding climb through the medieval heart of Rovinj's Old Town, flanked by colour-washed Renaissance and Baroque houses, fragrant with the smell of the sea breeze coming off the Adriatic, and ending at the bell tower of the Church of St. Euphemia, whose dome is visible from the sea. On exhibition day, this already-beautiful setting becomes extraordinary: paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, and mixed-media works crowd every available surface, and the artist-visitors-work combination creates an unusual intimacy that no formal gallery can manufacture.
The Exhibition
The Grisia Exhibition has been running for decades and has grown to include 200–400 exhibiting artists each year. There is no formal curation — anyone who applies and passes a basic quality review can exhibit. The result is an eclectic mix of styles, subjects, and media that accurately reflects the breadth of contemporary Croatian and international art production, from hyperrealist maritime paintings to abstract expressionism to intricate ceramic work. The direct relationship between artist and potential buyer — with works priced by the artist and available for immediate purchase — gives the event an energy that formal gallery openings rarely achieve.
Rovinj Beyond the Exhibition
Rovinj is one of the most beautiful small cities on the Adriatic coast — an extraordinarily well-preserved Venetian-era fishing town on a peninsula that juts into the sea, with a skyline dominated by the Church of St. Euphemia's campanile and a labyrinthine old town of extraordinary architectural richness. The surrounding Istrian coast and hinterland offer truffle country, excellent wine estates, and the architectural legacy of centuries of Venetian, Austrian, and Italian influence. For electronic music, Sea Star Festival takes place in nearby Umag in May.
Date 2026: August 9 (second Sunday of August), Grisia Street, Rovinj Old Town, Istria.
Tickets: Free. No ticket or registration required — just walk up Grisia Street.
Getting There: Rovinj is on Istria's west coast, 60km south of Poreč and 60km southwest of Pula. Regular buses from Pula (~1 hr) and Poreč (~1 hr). Driving provides flexibility for exploring the surrounding wine and truffle country.
Tips: Arrive mid-morning to browse before the street fills up. Bring cash if you intend to buy — not all artists accept card. The street itself is steep — wear comfortable shoes. Have lunch at one of Rovinj's excellent Old Town restaurants after browsing the exhibition.
