Named after the lynx (ris in Croatian), Risnjak National Park protects the mountainous forests of the Gorski Kotar region between the coast and continental Croatia. The park's highest peak, Veliki Risnjak at 1,528m, offers panoramic views stretching to the Alps, the Kvarner coast, and the Pannonian Plain on clear days. Dense beech and fir forests shelter bears, wolves, lynx, and chamois. The Leska educational trail introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. Entrance fee: adults from €3 (low season) to €7 (peak season). Best months to visit: May, June, July, September.
