Opatija Advent transforms the most elegant resort town on the Kvarner Riviera into a winter wonderland for the Christmas season — five weeks of markets, illuminations, concerts, and festive programming along the spectacular Lungomare coastal promenade and through the parks, gardens, and grand hotel terraces of this Belle Époque jewel. While the rest of Croatia's Adriatic coast quiets for winter, Opatija has always maintained a year-round appeal rooted in its history as Austria-Hungary's premier resort destination, and the Advent season has become one of its most atmospheric and beloved events.
Opatija: A Belle Époque Jewel
Opatija was developed as a resort from the 1880s onwards by the South Railway Company, which built the first grand hotel (the Quarnero, now the Kvarner) in 1884 to attract wealthy Viennese and Central European guests to the mild Kvarner climate. The result was a concentration of grand Habsburg-era architecture — villas, palace hotels, tea gardens, and the Lungomare seafront walkway — that gives Opatija a character unlike any other Croatian coastal town. The town's mild microclimate (the Kvarner mountains protect it from cold winds; the sea moderates temperatures) means that December and January are genuinely pleasant, with temperatures rarely falling below 5–8°C.
The Advent Programme
The Opatija Advent programme includes: Christmas markets with local crafts, food, and mulled wine along the Lungomare; festive illuminations throughout the town and gardens; classical and festive concerts in the Kvarner Grand Hotel garden, the town's theatres, and the historic Villa Angiolina garden; New Year's Eve celebrations on the waterfront; and special seasonal menus at Opatija's restaurants and grand hotels. The combination of ornate Belle Époque architecture, the illuminated sea promenade, and the festive atmosphere creates a deeply romantic and atmospheric winter experience.
Getting There
Opatija is 15km from Rijeka — easily combined with a visit to the Rijeka Carnival in February. For a winter coastal escape that combines elegance with festive atmosphere, Opatija Advent offers one of the most distinctive options in Croatia.

Getting There: Opatija is 15km from Rijeka — bus connections from Rijeka every 20–30 min. Direct bus from Zagreb (~3 hrs). Train to Rijeka, then bus to Opatija. Fly to Rijeka Airport (30km) or drive.
Accommodation: Grand hotels at winter rates offer exceptional value — the Kvarner, Milenij, and Imperial are the most atmospheric. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for the Christmas–New Year period.
Tips: The Lungomare evening walk with the festive lights is magical. Opatija's grand hotel afternoon teas are a Belle Époque tradition worth experiencing. Rijeka is 20 minutes away for day trips.
