Omiš Pirate Festival 2026 — a 3-day medieval pirate spectacle commemorating Omiš's historical pirate republic, with sea battles, costumed processions, and fireworks. August 7–9.
The Omiš Pirate Festival is one of the most distinctive and entertaining folk history festivals in Dalmatia — a three-day spectacle held in Omiš each August that commemorates the town's remarkable history as one of the Adriatic's most successful and long-lived pirate republics. From the 12th to the 17th century, the pirates of Omiš — the Kačić clan and their allies — terrorised merchant shipping across the Adriatic from their near-impregnable base at the confluence of the Cetina River and the sea, defending themselves behind the town's dramatic limestone cliffs and fortress towers. The festival brings this dramatic history to life with sea battles, costumed processions, theatrical performances, medieval markets, and a spectacular firework display.
The History Behind the Festival
Omiš's pirates were not simple bandits — they were a formidable naval force that repeatedly defeated Venetian expeditions sent to destroy them, made alliances with rival powers, and operated a proto-democratic republic of their own governed by the Kačić clan. The town's geography made it almost impossible to attack from the sea (the narrow entrance to the Cetina gorge could be defended by a handful of men), and the surrounding mountain landscape made overland attack equally challenging. The Omiš pirates charged tolls on shipping, attacked Venetian merchant vessels, and occasionally took captives for ransom — all while maintaining a structured social order within their community. The festival presents this history with considerable theatrical panache and a light touch that makes it accessible and entertaining for all ages.
The Spectacle
The festival's highlights include: a simulated sea battle in the harbour, with costumed pirates on replica period vessels engaging in combat; a ceremonial parade through the Old Town with participants in period pirate dress; theatrical performances drawing on the Kačić chronicles; a medieval market selling period crafts, food, and weapons; and a closing firework display from the Mirabela Tower that lights up the Cetina Canyon above the town.
Omiš as a Destination
Omiš is a compelling small town at the dramatically beautiful mouth of the Cetina River Canyon — framed by sheer limestone walls, with a medieval fortress perched impossibly on the cliff above, and a wide shingle beach stretching along the coast. The Cetina River offers kayaking, rafting, and zip-lining in the gorge above the town — excellent for a half-day adventure. Omiš is 25km south of Split, easily combined with the Split Summer Festival or the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa in the same town in July.
Dates 2026: August 7–9, Omiš Old Town and harbour.
Tickets: Most events free (street performances, parade, harbour battle viewing). Some ticketed evening events (€5–15).
Getting There: Omiš is 25km south of Split — frequent buses from Split (~30 min). Combine with Split Summer Festival or a klapa concert for a broader Dalmatian cultural experience.
Tips: The harbour sea battle is the most spectacular event — find a good spot on the harbour wall or a terrace bar early. The Mirabela Tower is visible from all over town — climbing to the fortress before the festival gives a great view of the Cetina Canyon. Kayaking on the Cetina (half-day) is an excellent activity for the daytime.
