Đakovački Vezovi 2026 celebrates Slavonian folk traditions with embroidery, traditional costumes, folk music, and the famous horse-riding displays in Đakovo, June 29 – July 5.
Đakovački Vezovi (the "Embroideries of Đakovo") is one of the oldest and most authentic folk festivals in Croatia — a week-long celebration of Slavonian traditional culture held in the small cathedral city of Đakovo every year at the end of June and beginning of July. The festival was founded in 1967 to preserve and celebrate the rich embroidery traditions of the Slavonia-Baranja region, but has grown into a comprehensive showcase of everything that makes Slavonian culture distinctive: traditional costumes of extraordinary richness and craftsmanship, tamburica folk music performed by ensembles from across the region, traditional singing and dance, and the spectacular Lipizzaner horse displays for which Đakovo is internationally known.
The Embroidery Tradition
Slavonian folk embroidery is one of the most elaborate and visually striking textile traditions in Europe. The traditional women's costumes worn at Đakovački Vezovi feature intricate geometric patterns in vivid red, black, and white thread on white linen — patterns that are specific to particular villages and families, handed down through generations with rules about who may wear which patterns. These are not costumes for tourists: they are genuine cultural expressions worn with deep personal meaning by the women who created or inherited them. The festival provides one of the rare opportunities for outsiders to see these textiles in their living cultural context rather than behind museum glass.
Lipizzaner Horses
Đakovo's Ergela stud farm has been breeding Lipizzaner horses — the magnificent white horses famous for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna — since 1506, making it one of the oldest Lipizzaner breeding operations in the world. The horse displays at Đakovački Vezovi draw thousands of visitors from across Croatia and internationally, combining classical dressage moves with traditional equestrian displays in a spectacular outdoor arena setting.
Slavonia as a Destination
Slavonia is the least visited region of mainland Croatia and arguably the most underrated. Its flat agricultural landscape, grand Baroque architecture, excellent local wines (Graševina, the local Welschriesling, is often outstanding), and deeply rooted folk traditions offer a completely different kind of Croatian experience from the coastal norm. Đakovo's magnificent neo-Gothic cathedral, completed in 1882, dominates the town skyline and is one of the finest ecclesiastical buildings in Croatia. Combine Đakovački Vezovi with a visit to nearby Osijek, Slavonia's main city, and the extraordinary Baranja wine country.
