Discover the best hiking trails in Croatia. From Plitvice Lakes boardwalks to Velebit mountain routes and Paklenica canyon climbs. Trail maps, difficulty ratings, and seasonal tips.
Croatia offers outstanding hiking across its diverse landscapes including coastal mountains, forested highlands, and national park boardwalks. The Velebit mountain range — Croatia's longest — is home to two national parks (Sjeverni Velebit and Paklenica) and the challenging Premužić Trail, a 57 km marked path through remote karst terrain. Paklenica National Park's Velika and Mala Paklenica canyons are the premier climbing and multi-day hiking destination with rock faces up to 400 m.
Plitvice Lakes National Park features 90 km of wooden walkways and hiking paths weaving between 16 terraced lakes and 92 waterfalls. These are easy to moderate trails suitable for all fitness levels. Risnjak National Park in Gorski Kotar is Croatia's most forested national park with trails through old-growth beech and fir forest, home to lynx, brown bear, and wildcat.
Coastal hiking: The Biokovo Nature Park above Makarska offers dramatic views over the Dalmatian coast from trails reaching 1,762 m. The Učka Nature Park above Opatija and the Kvarner Riviera has trails through chestnut forest to the Vojak summit (1,401 m). On the islands, Hvar and Brač have marked walking routes through lavender fields and Mediterranean scrub.
Best hiking months: April–June and September–October for cooler temperatures and lower crowds. Mountain trails above 1,200 m may have snow until May. Carry sufficient water on all coastal mountain trails as springs are rare in summer.
