**Choose Rovinj** if you want Istria's most romantic and atmospheric old town: a medieval fishing village tumbling down a narrow peninsula into the sea, crowned by the soaring campanile of St. Euphemia's Church. Its cobblestone alleys lined with ochre and terracotta facades, the working harbour with fishing boats and yachts, and the surrounding pine-forested islands make it one of Croatia's most photographed and beloved towns. Rovinj rewards slow wandering, photography, sailing and seafood. It is slightly more expensive and less well-connected by public transport than Poreč.

**Choose Poreč** if the Euphrasius Basilica — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and one of the finest surviving examples of early Byzantine mosaic art in the world — is on your itinerary. Poreč also offers far better organised beach and family resort infrastructure: the Zelena Laguna and Plava Laguna resort areas have gently sloping pebbly beaches, water parks and full amenities, making them ideal for families with young children. Poreč is slightly cheaper and has more accommodation variety.

**If you have time, combine both.** Rovinj and Poreč are only 35 kilometres apart — a 35-minute drive or a 50-minute bus journey. Many visitors base themselves in Poreč for the beach infrastructure and take a half-day trip to Rovinj for the atmosphere and photography.
