Plitvice Lakes National Park (Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera) protects a chain of 16 terraced karst lakes linked by 92 waterfalls, set within a deep forested canyon in the Lika region of central Croatia. The water changes colour constantly — emerald green in the shallower upper lakes, turquoise and deep azure in the lower pools — because of calcium carbonate and magnesium dissolved in the water.
