A small town on the Lika plateau near Plitvice Lakes, Udbina is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Krbava Field (1493), a major defeat of Croatian forces by the Ottomans. The Church of Croatian Martyrs, built on the battlefield itself, is an important national memorial. Today Udbina is best known as the gateway to the Velebit mountain area and as the location of a military airfield now used for recreational aviation and gliding.
