The capital of the Krapina-Zagorje County in the green hills of Croatian Zagorje, Krapina is world-famous for the Museum of Krapina Neanderthals — home to the richest Neanderthal fossil site ever discovered, with over 900 fossil bones from at least 70 individuals found on Hušnjakovo hill above the town. The museum, opened in 2010, is one of the most impressive natural history museums in Central Europe. Beyond its prehistoric fame, Krapina is a pleasant Zagorje hill town with a medieval old town, a thermal spa, and excellent access to the castles, vineyards and pilgrimage sites of the surrounding region.
