Zagreb Advent 2026 — voted Europe's best Christmas market multiple years running, with ice skating, mulled wine, street food, and festive concerts across the Croatian capital. Nov 28 – Jan 7.
Zagreb Advent has been voted Europe's best Christmas market multiple times by readers of the European Best Destinations platform — a remarkable distinction for a city that is still, despite its remarkable cultural richness, underknown among Western European travellers. What makes Zagreb Advent special is not any single feature but the combination of an extraordinary historical setting, genuine craft and food quality, a warm and welcoming civic atmosphere, and a scale that fills the entire city centre with festive events while remaining navigable and human.
The Markets
Zagreb Advent operates across multiple locations in the city centre, each with its own character. The main market on Zrinjevac — a formal park lined with 19th-century pavilions designed by the great Croatian architect Hermann Bollé — is the most atmospheric: wooden stalls under bare plane trees, mulled wine, grilled sausages, roasted chestnuts, and artisanal crafts. The ice-skating rink at Ledeni park and the market around the Cathedral on Kaptol add additional clusters. King Tomislav Square and Ban Jelačić Square host large-scale concerts and the city's famous New Year's Eve countdown. Together, these markets and events create a genuinely immersive festive cityscape that rewards extended exploration.
The Food
Zagreb's Advent is as much about food as it is about atmosphere. The market stalls serve: warm štrukli (baked cottage cheese pastries), traditional fritule (small fried doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar), sarma (cabbage rolls), roasted meats, and an ever-expanding range of artisanal Croatian products from honey and spirits to specialist cheeses and olive oil. The mulled wine (kuhano vino) is a local winter institution. For more elaborate dining, Zagreb's restaurant scene — which has become genuinely impressive over the past decade — operates with full menus through the winter season without summer crowds.
Zagreb as a Destination
Zagreb is one of Central Europe's most rewarding and most underrated capital cities. Its baroque Upper Town (Gornji Grad), Art Nouveau Lower Town, world-class museums, vibrant café culture, and excellent restaurant scene make it worth a multi-day visit entirely independent of Advent. The Cest is d'Best street arts festival in May and INmusic Festival in June are other compelling Zagreb events. The city's proximity to Istria (2 hrs), Plitvice Lakes National Park (2 hrs), and the Kvarner Gulf (1.5 hrs) makes it a natural base for a Croatian itinerary.
Dates 2026: November 28, 2026 – January 7, 2027, throughout Zagreb city centre.
Tickets: All outdoor market events free. Ice skating: ~€5–8 including skate hire. Ticketed concerts at HNK (Croatian National Theatre): €15–40. Check the Advent Zagreb website for the full programme.
Getting There: Zagreb is Croatia's capital, served by Zagreb Airport with connections from most European cities. City centre is 20 min from the airport by shuttle or taxi. The Advent markets are concentrated in the walkable city centre — no car needed.
Accommodation: Zagreb has excellent hotel and apartment options at significantly lower rates than in summer. Book 2–4 weeks ahead for the Christmas–New Year period.
Tips: Come on a weekday evening (Tuesday–Thursday) for the best atmosphere without weekend crowds. The Zrinjevac market is the most atmospheric. Don't miss the štrukli and fritule. Zagreb's café culture is excellent year-round — warm up between market visits. Day trips to Plitvice Lakes (2 hrs) or Istria are possible from Zagreb.
