Rapska Fjera 2026 — a 3-day medieval fair in Rab's perfectly preserved Old Town, with costumed processions, crossbow competitions, medieval markets and music. July 25–27.
Rapska Fjera is one of the most authentic and charming medieval festivals in the Adriatic — a three-day event held in Rab Old Town's extraordinary network of Roman-to-medieval streets and squares that brings the 15th century to life with a thoroughness and genuine community participation that more commercially minded medieval re-enactments rarely achieve. The festival commemorates the historic visit of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary to Rab in 1486, transforming the entire Old Town into a living tableau of medieval life.
Rab's Perfect Medieval Stage
Rab Old Town is exceptionally well suited to this kind of event — one of the best-preserved medieval coastal towns in the Adriatic, with its famous four campanile towers creating a distinctive skyline that has defined the island for centuries. The peninsula that forms the Old Town extends into the Kvarner channel, creating natural fortification and a compact, walkable historic core where every street and square can serve as a performance or market space. During Rapska Fjera, the entire Old Town is decorated in medieval style, with flags, banners, torches, and market stalls selling period crafts.
The Crossbow Competition
The centrepiece of the festival is the medieval crossbow competition — a tradition that dates back to Rab's own medieval guild of crossbowmen (Alka streljaštvo). Teams of competitors in period costume fire at traditional targets in a format that has been meticulously reconstructed from historical records. The competition is genuine rather than theatrical — the participants train throughout the year, and the results matter — while still being fully accessible and engaging to spectators who know nothing about medieval weaponry.
Festival Programme
The three-day Fjera includes: the ceremonial opening with a costumed procession through the Old Town representing the various medieval guilds and social classes; the crossbow competition; medieval market stalls selling food, drink, and crafts; performances by troubadours, jesters, acrobats, and musicians; theatrical re-enactments of historical events; and a torchlight finale on the final evening. The food and drink on offer leans into medieval reconstruction — roasted meats, period-recipe sweet pastries, and local wines served in clay vessels.
Rab Island as a Destination
Rab island is one of the Kvarner region's most appealing destinations — lush and green on its western inland side (the island is famous for its pine forests and exceptional beaches), stark and karstic on its eastern flank. The island's beaches — particularly Rajska plaža (Paradise Beach) near Lopar — are consistently ranked among the finest in Croatia. Combine Rapska Fjera with several days on the island's beaches, a visit to the Old Town (with or without the festival), and easy access to Rijeka and Opatija for the broader Kvarner experience.
Dates 2026: July 25–27, Rab Old Town, Kvarner.
Tickets: Most festival events are free (street performances, crossbow viewing, market). Some ticketed evening performances.
Getting There: Rab island is accessible by car ferry from Jablanac (mainland) — 15-minute crossing. Or ferry from Rijeka. The Old Town is walkable within the island's main town. Book car ferry places in advance in July (car ferries fill up). Alternatively, take a passenger catamaran from Rijeka.
Accommodation: Book 2–3 months ahead for late July. Rab town has a variety of hotels and apartments; the Lopar and Kampor areas of the island offer alternatives.
Tips: Wear period clothing if you want to participate more fully — some visitors dress up. The torchlight finale on the last evening is particularly atmospheric. Pair with a day at Rajska plaža (Paradise Beach) near Lopar.
