Pula Jazz Festival 2026 – Jazz Concerts at Fort Bourguignon | Croatia Istria

Pula Jazz Festival 2026 at Fort Bourguignon, Pula — world-class jazz in a dramatic outdoor setting, June 11–14. [Istria](/region/istria) travel guide and concert tips.

The Pula Jazz Festival is one of Croatia's oldest and most distinguished music festivals — an intimate gathering of world-class jazz talent held each June at Fort Bourguignon, a beautifully positioned 19th-century military fortification on the hills above Pula with panoramic views of the Adriatic and the surrounding Istrian countryside. The combination of outstanding music, a genuinely dramatic outdoor venue, and warm early-summer evenings makes this one of the most atmospheric jazz events in Europe.

History & Prestige

The festival has been running since 1971, making it one of the longest-running jazz festivals in Southeast Europe. In its five decades, it has hosted jazz legends from Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie to more recent appearances by Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Bobby McFerrin, and Cassandra Wilson. The festival maintains a strong commitment to the traditional and contemporary jazz mainstream while making room for fusion, world music, and experimental crossover artists who expand the genre's boundaries.

Fort Bourguignon

The venue itself is half the experience. Fort Bourguignon sits on a strategic hilltop above Pula, built by Napoleon's forces and expanded by the Austrian Empire into a substantial military installation with concentric walls, towers, and bastions. The inner courtyard has been converted into an open-air concert space that holds perhaps 2,000 people — intimate enough that even the back rows feel close to the stage, yet with all the acoustic drama of an outdoor setting. The fort's stone walls and the surrounding Adriatic horizon give concerts a cinematic quality that purpose-built concert halls can rarely match.

Pula Beyond the Festival

Pula is one of the most impressive Roman cities in the world — the giant amphitheatre (Arena) at its heart is better preserved than most in Italy and regularly hosts spectacular summer concerts of its own. The Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergii, and the well-preserved Roman forum give the city an extraordinary historical density. Combine the Jazz Festival with a visit to the Arena, a day trip to the Brijuni Islands National Park, or a drive through the Istrian interior. The Pula Film Festival in July is another iconic Pula event worth planning around.

Dates 2026: June 11–14 at Fort Bourguignon, Pula, Istria.

Tickets: €25–60 per evening, depending on the act. Season passes available. Book online via the official website or at the Fort on the evening (if available). Popular concerts sell out.

Getting There: Pula has its own international airport with many European connections. Fort Bourguignon is 2km from Pula's city centre — taxi or 30-min walk. The city centre is walkable and well worth exploring before the evening concerts.

Tips: Arrive early to secure a good position (standing or seated lawn seating). Bring a light jacket — evenings cool down. Visit Pula's Roman Arena and forum during the day. The Pula Film Festival in July is another reason to plan an Istrian visit.
