Novigrad Fishermen's Night 2026 – Open-Air Seafood Feast in Istria | August

Novigrad Fishermen's Night 2026 — Istria's most beloved open-air seafood and wine festival in Novigrad harbour, August 14–16. Fresh fish, local wine, live music, and the best of Istrian food culture.

The Novigrad Fishermen's Night (Ribarsko noć Novigrad) is one of the most charming and genuinely local food festivals on the Istrian coast — a three-night open-air celebration of the fishing and culinary traditions of Novigrad, a small Venetian-heritage town on the northern Istrian coast, held each August around the town's historic harbour. For three evenings, the harbour quay becomes a spectacular open-air restaurant serving the freshest fish and seafood from the northern Adriatic, accompanied by local Istrian wines and live music — an event that manages to combine genuine cultural authenticity with the kind of relaxed, convivial atmosphere that makes food festivals genuinely enjoyable rather than commercially overwhelming.

Istrian Seafood Culture

The fishing traditions of the northern Adriatic are among the richest and most sophisticated in the Mediterranean. The waters off the Istrian coast produce exceptional quality fish — especially the sea bass (lubin), sea bream (orada), and the extraordinary scampi of the Kvarner Gulf (Kvarnerski škampi) that are among the finest shellfish in Europe. Novigrad is particularly famous for its shellfish — the town's oyster beds produce excellent oysters that are served in local restaurants year-round but feature prominently at the Fishermen's Night. The festival's cooking is traditional Istrian — grilled fish with olive oil and herbs, brudet (fish stew), and the various preparations of shellfish that characterise the local cuisine.

The Setting

Novigrad is one of the most perfectly preserved small Venetian towns on the Croatian coast — a compact peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, with a labyrinthine old town of Venetian Gothic and Renaissance buildings, a striking Venetian-style loggia, and a harbour that still serves as the base for the town's fishing fleet. At night, with the boats lit up in the harbour and the long tables of the Fishermen's Night spreading along the quayside, the atmosphere is as close to a perfect Mediterranean summer evening as any organised event can create.

Istria Food & Wine Context

The Fishermen's Night fits into a broader context of exceptional food culture in Istria. The region's truffle industry (centred around Motovun and Buzet) produces some of the world's finest truffles, its olive oil is consistently among the world's best, and its wines — particularly the white Malvazija Istarska and the red Teran — have attracted serious international attention in recent years. The Istria Wine & Olive Oil Festival in Poreč in May provides a more formal introduction to these products. For electronic music nearby, Lighthouse Festival takes place south of Novigrad near Poreč in June.

Dates 2026: August 14–16, Novigrad Harbour, Istria.

Tickets: Entry to the event area is typically free; food and wine priced at stalls (budget €20–40 per person for a full evening of food and drink).

Getting There: Novigrad is on Istria's northwest coast, 35km north of Poreč and 80km from Pula. Bus connections from Poreč and Pula. Driving gives flexibility for exploring the surrounding Istrian wine and truffle country.

Tips: Arrive early (7–8pm) to secure a spot at the harbourside tables before they fill. The freshly grilled fish is the event's centrepiece — order early while supplies last. Local Malvazija wine pairs perfectly. Combine with a visit to Rovinj (30km south) on the same Istrian trip.
