International Children's Festival Šibenik 2026 – Theatre & Arts for Kids | Croatia

The International Children's Festival in Šibenik 2026 is one of the world's longest-running children's arts festivals. Theatre, puppetry, workshops and performances in a UNESCO medieval city, June 13–27.

The International Children's Festival (Međunarodni dječji festival) in Šibenik is a remarkable institution — one of the world's longest-running children's arts festivals, founded in 1958, and one of the most beloved summer events in the Dalmatia region. For two weeks each June, Šibenik's squares, stages, and medieval streets fill with theatre companies, puppet troupes, circus performers, film screenings, and interactive workshops from Croatia and dozens of countries worldwide — all created for young audiences but genuinely engaging for adults too.

A Festival Built Into a Medieval City

What makes the Šibenik Children's Festival so special is its integration with one of Croatia's most extraordinary historic cities. Šibenik is a UNESCO World Heritage city — home to the Cathedral of St. James, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture built entirely of stone (no brick, no wood) over a century from 1431. The festival uses the cathedral's steps, the old town squares, the harbour, and every available nook of the medieval streetscape as performance spaces, creating an immersive environment where history and creativity meet at every corner.

Programme Highlights

The festival's programme is genuinely international, typically featuring companies from 20–30 countries spanning Europe, Asia, South America, and beyond. The programme includes competitive theatre, visual arts exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, street performances, and intensive arts workshops where children participate directly. Many performances are non-verbal, making the language barrier irrelevant — a child from Germany enjoys the same Croatian puppet show as a child from Zagreb. The festival's emphasis on high-quality, meaningful children's culture (rather than pure entertainment) has earned it serious international recognition over its six-decade history.

Šibenik as a Destination

Šibenik is increasingly recognised as one of the most rewarding destinations in Dalmatia — a city with serious historical and architectural weight, excellent restaurants, and a position that makes it a natural base for excursions to Krka National Park (30km inland), Kornati Islands, and the medieval hilltop fortress of Burnum. Combined with the festival, a June stay in Šibenik offers an exceptionally rich cultural experience.

Dates 2026: June 13–27 at venues across Šibenik Old Town.

Tickets: Many performances are free (outdoor shows in public squares). Indoor theatre shows: €5–15. Full programme on the festival website. Children under 5 often admitted free.

Getting There: Šibenik is on the Dalmatian coast, 80km north of Split. Regular buses from Split (~1.5 hrs) and Zagreb (~5 hrs). Close to Krka National Park (30km). Good accommodation options in town and surrounding area.

Tips: The festival is genuinely excellent for all ages — don't be deterred by the "children's" label. Evening performances in the cathedral square are particularly atmospheric. Combine with a day trip to Krka Waterfalls.
