Croatia's greatest living tradition — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2010. Mounted alkari in 18th-century armour gallop at a small iron ring (the alka) suspended at 3.32 m. Held every first Sunday of August since 1715 to commemorate the miraculous Croatian victory over 60,000 Ottoman soldiers. The town of Sinj (pop. 11,000) draws 30,000–50,000 spectators — one of the highest crowd-to-town ratios in Europe.
